. Every ninth woman on the planet, at a certain stage of life, develops breast cancer. Even if this happens, thanks to modern civilization, it is possible to ensure longevity and quality of life for every woman. Mortality from breast cancer in modern society today has been reduced to zero.

This is possible only when medicine is focused on healthy people. Two major areas of the institute’s activity are the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant breast diseases. More precisely, this is the ability to distinguish benign disease from cancer when the disease is already evident, or to detect and not miss the disease at an early stage, which in the medical world is called screening. It is precisely thanks to screening that morbidity and mortality from breast cancer have been reduced to zero.

The first step for every woman who visits the institute is mandatory mammography and ultrasound examination of the breast. Based on these two studies (with accuracy up to 95%), a consilium of institute specialists determines what type of breast pathology is present and establishes an accurate diagnosis of benign or malignant tumor.

In the case of a benign disease diagnosis, the woman’s examination is considered complete; she receives recommendations for further monitoring, since benign breast diseases do not require treatment and never transform into malignant ones. If the diagnostic examination results in a breast cancer diagnosis, the examination continues to determine the stage of disease spread through brain CT scans, chest imaging, isotope bone scanning, tumor marker blood tests, and ultimately, a biopsy to obtain a histological diagnosis and identify malignant cells.

In certain cases of normal CT and isotope study results in women with breast cancer, there is a need for positron emission body scanning, which can detect metastasis at the microscopic level — undetectable by any other methods. Only after such a comprehensive examination to determine the disease stage, the institute’s consilium, headed by Prof. Borovik, makes a decision on further treatment strategy.
