Hematology is the science of diseases of three cell types: leukocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets. Hematological investigation targets two areas: blood and bone marrow. Blood differential and bone marrow cytology form the foundation of hematological diagnosis.

Certainly, disease spread and staging require methods such as Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography, PET, and other scanning techniques. However, the vast majority of patients receive their diagnosis within 24 hours through blood tests and bone marrow biopsy. Over the past 40 years, bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation has been used with increasing frequency for the treatment of numerous malignant and non-malignant conditions.

Early animal studies quickly revealed that bone marrow is the organ most sensitive to the damaging effects of radiation. Reinfusion of bone marrow cells rescues lethally irradiated animals. In the 1950s, patients with acute leukemia received radiotherapy; however, after a brief effect, the disease relapsed. By 2015, 200 allogeneic bone marrow transplants had been performed.
